Limitations and considerations for list view search:

  • SOSL requires at least two characters for a search term. If a search is triggered with just one character, the server will deliver a corresponding human readable error message that is displayed.

  • Some fields are not searchable due to SOSL limitations:
    • Lookup fields
    • Derived fields
    • Formula fields
    • Non-text fields (such as INTEGER and CURRENCY)

  • List views on external objects are not searchable.

  • Person Account records may be returned in list view results if they match filter criteria however, searching list view results is not supported for Person Accounts. Example results may be returned for Person Account results that do not match list view filter criteria.

  • Results are limited to the items contained in the list view. So, since the list view only has 2,000 items (due to SOQL limits), the search will only find results in those 2,000 items and does not find results in any other items beyond those. To get around this limitation, you can sort the Account Name field from Z to A so that the “Z” account falls within the first 2,000 records listed. You can also add filters to make the list view more specific. Review Search List Views in Lightning Experience and 'List view' search.

  • List views aren’t designed to help you find a single specific record. They are meant to search for multiple records by via specific filters.
