Salesforce accepts date values within a specific range: January 1, 1700 to December 31, 4000. Dates outside this range cannot be entered or saved in standard Salesforce fields.


Note: Audit fields (such as CreatedDate and LastModifiedDate) have an additional restriction — they cannot accept dates before January 1, 1970. All date values are adjusted based on the user's configured time zone.

Valid Date Range in Salesforce

Only dates within the supported range are valid for entry in Salesforce standard fields. The exact boundaries shift slightly based on the user's time zone offset.

Earliest Valid Date

  • UTC: 1700-01-01T00:00:00Z (just after midnight on January 1, 1700)
  • Time Zone Example: In the Pacific time zone (UTC-8), the earliest valid date is 1699-12-31T16:00:00 (4:00 PM on December 31, 1699).

These values are offset by the user's time zone. Entering a date that resolves to before 1700-01-01Z in UTC results in a validation error.

Latest Valid Date

  • UTC: 4000-12-31T00:00:00Z (just after midnight on December 31, 4000)
  • These values are also offset by the user's time zone.

Audit Field Restriction

Audit fields in Salesforce (such as CreatedDate and LastModifiedDate) cannot accept dates before January 1, 1970. Attempting to set these fields to an earlier date via the API results in an error.
