Occasionally, you may want to follow up with prospects who didn't open a list email you sent. This article explains how to use suppression and dynamic lists to target prospects who didn't open a specific email.

If the Initial Email Has Been Sent

If you have already sent the initial email, you can create a suppression list from the list email report.
 
1. Navigate to Reports > Marketing Assets > Emails > List Emails (in Classic) or the Account Engagement Reports tab > Marketing Assets > Emails > List Emails (in Lightning App)
2. Next to the initial email, click the number link in the Total Opens column. 
3. Click Tools > Add to List
4. Create a new list. This list contains all prospects who opened the initial email. We recommend calling it something like "Initial Email Name -- Opened".
 
Send your follow-up email to the list that you used for the initial email, and use the list you just created as a suppression list. The prospects that opened the initial email will be suppressed and will not receive the follow-up email. 
 

If the Initial Email Has Not Been Sent

If you haven't sent the initial email yet, you can add a completion action to automatically put prospects who open the email on a suppression list.
 
Before you begin, you'll need to create a list to which you can add prospects who opened the initial email -- we recommend calling it something like "Initial Email Name -- Opened".

1. On the Sending tab in your email draft, scroll down to the Completion Actions section.
2. Under the Take action when... heading, mark a prospect opens this email.  
3. Select Add to list from the drop down, then choose the correct list. 

When a prospect opens the email, the completion action will add them to the list. Send your follow-up email to the list that you used for the initial email, and use the list you just created as a suppression list. The prospects that opened the initial email will be suppressed and will not receive the follow-up email. 
 

Creating a List of Prospects that Didn't Open a Specific Email 

If you need a list of prospects that didn't open a specific email for some reason than following up, you can create a dynamic list using the list the initial email was sent to, and a list of prospects who opened the email. 

1) Browse to the email report and click into the "Opens" metric.
2) Create a new static list and add all the prospects to it via a table action.
3) Create a new dynamic list, and set these rules:

Match Type: Match All
Prospect List | is | [the list you sent the initial email to]
-and-
Prospect list | isn't | [the list created in step 2 above]
