CRM Analytics error: "INVALID_TYPE: sObject type 'InsightsExternalData' is not supported" when external data job fails

CRM Analytics datasets can be generated via an External Data integration through API. More details on this can be found in the External Data API Developers Guide. 

Configuration

The user used in the connector (details in the Connect To Salesforce section) must have the "Upload External Data to CRM Analytics" system permission assigned.

External Job Error

An external data job may fail with an error like the following:

INVALID_TYPE: sObject type 'InsightsExternalData' is not supported. If you are attempting to use a custom object, be sure to append the '__c' after the entity name. Please reference your WSDL or the describe call for the appropriate names.

Resolution

Ensure that the user the external data source is connecting with has the "Upload External Data to CRM Analytics" system permission assigned.
