Salesforce uses a caching system to improve the performance of reports and list views. When a query is run recently, the resulting data is stored in logical memory (cached data). Reading from cached memory is significantly faster than reading from a physical database, which is why the same report may run faster the second time.
Note: The duration for which data remains cached depends on multiple variables and may not always be consistent. This behavior is expected and is not a defect.
When a report or list view is run for the first time — or after its cached data has expired — Salesforce queries the database directly. This direct query is slower than reading from cached data. Running the report again may allow it to complete successfully by leveraging the cached results from the first run.
If the report is timing out, running it a second time may reduce the runtime and allow it to complete successfully.
