The Parent Case Number field on the Case object behaves differently from other relationship fields such as Parent Account. Rather than being treated as a standard lookup relationship field, it is treated as a numeric field — similar to the Case Number field it references. This causes unexpected and incorrect results when using the following filters in List Views or Reports:
These filters do not behave as expected because numeric fields evaluate blank differently from lookup/text fields.
To work around this behavior, two options are available:
Option 1 (Recommended): Create a text formula field
Create a new text formula field on the Case object with the following formula — type the field reference ParentId directly as the formula value. Then use this new formula field in your filter instead of the Parent Case Number field. This approach is recommended because it ensures your filters remain accurate even if the behavior of the Parent Case Number field changes in a future release.
Option 2: Use numeric comparisons
Note that Option 2 relies on the current numeric field behavior and may be affected by future product changes.
