Error: 'Time Limit for Logging On Was Reached' in Salesforce for Outlook with Microsoft Outlook 2016

Data pubblicazione: May 29, 2026
Descrizione

Microsoft Outlook 2016 displays the following error message on startup when Salesforce for Outlook (SFO) is installed:
"The time limit for logging on was reached while waiting for system resources. Try again. MAPI 1.0 [000004C2]"
This error typically occurs when there is a conflict between Salesforce for Outlook (SFO) and the local Microsoft Office installation, often caused by a corrupted Office installation or stale Salesforce for Outlook cache files. MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) is the Windows communications layer that Salesforce for Outlook uses to connect with and sync data to Microsoft Outlook. When MAPI fails to initialize within the time limit, Outlook throws this error on startup.

Uninstall Salesforce for Outlook

To resolve the MAPI logon time limit error in Salesforce for Outlook with Microsoft Outlook 2016, follow the steps below. Begin by checking the Microsoft Knowledge Base article listed in Additional Resources, as it may resolve the issue without requiring a full reinstall.

Step 1: Uninstall Salesforce for Outlook (SFO)

Close all open programs, including Microsoft Outlook. Then uninstall Salesforce for Outlook (SFO) from the Windows Control Panel:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Locate Salesforce for Outlook in the list and click Uninstall.

For detailed steps, see "Uninstall Salesforce for Outlook" in Additional Resources.

Step 2: Repair Your Microsoft Office Installation

After uninstalling SFO, run a repair on your Microsoft Office installation:

  1. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Select the version of Office that includes your Microsoft Outlook.
  3. Click Change, then select the Repair radio button and follow the on-screen wizard.

Important: If you have the Click-to-Run version of Office 365 installed, only the Repair option will appear. Always select Online Repair — do not use Quick Repair, as it may not fully resolve the issue.

Step 3: Reboot Your Computer

Once the Office repair is complete, restart your computer before proceeding.

Step 4: Clear Salesforce for Outlook Cache Files

After restarting, navigate to the following folder path and delete all contents:
*%AppData%\salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook*
Then navigate to the %Temp% folder and delete all contents there as well.

Step 5: Reinstall Salesforce for Outlook

Download the Salesforce for Outlook installer (.exe) from your Salesforce org and install it based on your Windows permission level:

  • Local Administrator: You may install using either the "Me only" option or the "For everyone who uses this machine" option.
  • Standard User: Ensure your IT department has installed all required prerequisites first, then use the Me Only option during installation.

Step 6: Verify the Fix

Open Microsoft Outlook. Confirm that Salesforce for Outlook loads without displaying the MAPI error message. Attempt to sync or use Salesforce for Outlook features to confirm the issue is fully resolved.
