When using Salesforce Outlook Integration or Salesforce Inbox in Microsoft Outlook, users may find that the Salesforce add-in icon appears grayed out or is not clickable. This typically occurs when no email is open or in the reading pane, when the Outlook view has been altered, or when the Microsoft Outlook Reading Pane is turned off.
Note: The Salesforce add-in icon will be grayed out whenever no email is open or selected in Outlook — this is the most common cause.

Solution 1: Reset the Microsoft Outlook View

Resetting the current Outlook view often restores the add-in icon.

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. In the Current View section, click Reset View.
  4. Click Yes to confirm resetting the current view.
  5. The Outlook Integration and Salesforce Inbox icons should be active again.

Solution 2: Disable and Re-enable the Salesforce Add-in

Toggling the add-in off and on can resolve display issues caused by a corrupted add-in state.

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click File | Options | Add-ins.
  3. Uncheck the box for the Side Panel and Toolbar options for Salesforce for Outlook (SFO).

Solution 3: Enable the Reading Pane

The Salesforce add-in requires the Reading Pane to be active to display properly.

  1. In Outlook, click the View tab.
  2. Click the Reading Pane dropdown in the Layout section.
  3. Select Right or Left to enable the Reading Pane.

Solution 4: Remove Inbox Grouping

If the Inbox view has grouping enabled, it can prevent the add-in from activating.

  1. In Outlook, click the View tab.
  2. Click View Settings in the top left corner.
  3. Click the Group By... button.
  4. Click Clear All and then click OK.

Solution 5: Reinstall Salesforce for Outlook
