Custom Report Types — Object Names Displayed Differently for Primary vs. Secondary Objects in Salesforce

In Salesforce Custom Report Types, the label displayed for an object depends on whether it is the primary object or a secondary/subsequent object in the report type definition. Administrators may notice inconsistencies in object naming during Custom Report Type setup, particularly when the same object appears with a different name depending on its position in the hierarchy. This article explains how each label is determined and the best practice for avoiding duplicate labels.

Ratkaisu

Primary Object Label

The selection for the primary object on a Custom Report Type is based on the Plural Label field on the object itself. To view this field, access the object record page in Setup.

Secondary and Subsequent Object Labels

The selection for the secondary and subsequent objects is determined by the Related List Label on the field that defines the object relationship. To view this field:

  1. First determine which field relates the two objects being added to the Custom Report Type.
  2. Open that field in Setup.
  3. Go to the Related List Label field — this is the label that appears in the list of objects available for secondary and subsequent objects on the Custom Report Type.

Best Practice

Best Practices dictate that there should not be a duplicate label used across the Plural Label and Related List Label fields. Duplicate labels can cause confusion when building Custom Report Types and make it harder for users to identify the correct object in the selection list.
