Salesforce Administrator Receives "Insufficient Privileges" Error When Editing a Page Layout in Lightning Experience

A Salesforce System Administrator may receive the following error when attempting to edit a Page Layout in Lightning Experience:

"Insufficient Privileges: You do not have the level of access necessary to perform the operation you requested. Please contact the owner of the record or your administrator if access is necessary. For more information, see Insufficient Privileges Errors."

Cause: This error occurs because the Enhanced Page Layout Editor has not been enabled in the organization. The Enhanced Page Layout Editor is required for editing page layouts in Lightning Experience. When this feature is disabled, even System Administrators are unable to open and edit page layouts through the Lightning Experience interface.

Ratkaisu

To resolve this error, enable the Enhanced Page Layout Editor in your Salesforce organization. Follow the steps below.

Steps to Enable Enhanced Page Layout Editor

  1. Click the Gear icon and select Setup.
  2. In the Quick Find search field, enter User Interface.
  3. Select User Interface from the results under the User Interface section.
  4. Scroll down and select the checkbox for Enable Enhanced Page Layout Editor.
  5. Click Save.

Once enabled, the System Administrator can return to the page layout and edit it without encountering the Insufficient Privileges error.


Note: The Enhanced Page Layout Editor provides an improved drag-and-drop interface for managing page layouts in both Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic.
