Before installing Salesforce for Outlook (SFO) on a Windows computer, several Microsoft prerequisite components must be installed. These prerequisites are required for SFO to function correctly. If any of them are missing, corrupted, or not working properly, the SFO installation will fail.
Important: The steps in this article require local administrative rights on the computer. If you do not have admin rights on your machine, do not attempt this installation yourself. Contact your internal Help Desk or IT team to perform these steps.
The following Microsoft components must be installed before Salesforce for Outlook can be installed:
Note: Microsoft has retired support for Outlook 2007, so Salesforce for Outlook no longer supports Outlook 2007.
If Salesforce for Outlook is failing to install, or if a previously installed version is not working correctly, the most reliable fix is to uninstall SFO and all its prerequisite components, then reinstall them cleanly. This resolves issues caused by corrupted or partially installed prerequisites.
Warning: These steps require uninstall and reinstall access on the computer. If you cannot perform this yourself, forward these instructions to your internal IT team.
Open the Windows Control Panel and go to Programs and Features (on Windows XP, this is called Add or Remove Programs). From the list of installed programs, uninstall the following components:
Note: These Microsoft components may be required by other applications on the computer, such as Microsoft Outlook itself. It is safe to uninstall them as long as you reinstall them immediately after.
If you do not have local admin rights, ask your IT team to perform the uninstall.
After uninstalling, restart the computer. Then clear the Windows Temporary Files folder by pressing the Windows Start button, typing %TEMP%, and pressing Enter. Delete all files and folders inside the Temp folder. Some files may be locked by running programs (such as antivirus software) and cannot be deleted — this is normal and those files can be skipped.
Download and reinstall the following components from Microsoft's official website:
Note: If any of the Microsoft download links above are no longer active, search for the component by name on the Microsoft Download Center or using a search engine.
After all prerequisites are successfully installed, download the latest Salesforce for Outlook installer from Salesforce. Run the .EXE installer as a local administrator. The installer automatically checks for prerequisites and installs any that are still missing.
