Maximum Length for Salesforce System 'Name' Fields

Description

When working with Salesforce standard and custom objects, each 'Name' field has a maximum character limit that varies by object type. Exceeding these limits is not possible — Salesforce enforces them at the field level. This article provides a reference table of those limits.

Note: The limit for Custom Object Name fields applies if you don't use Auto Number as the Data Type.

Résolution

The following character limits apply to standard Name fields in Salesforce. Note that Custom Object Name field limits apply only when Auto Number is not used as the Data Type.

Character Limits by Object

  • 'Account Name' field is 255
  • 'Contact First Name' field is 40
  • 'Contact Last Name' field is 80
  • 'Opportunity Name' field is 120
  • 'Lead First Name' field is 40
  • 'Lead Last Name' field is 80
  • 'Campaign Name' field is 80
  • 'Contract Name' field is 80
  • 'Solution Name/ Solution Title' is 255 
  • 'Price Book Name' is 120
  • 'Macro Name' field is 255
  • 'Group Name' field is 40
  • 'Segment name' field is 80
  • Custom Object Name field is 80
