Change a User License from Chatter to Salesforce

Data pubblicazione: Jun 28, 2026
Descrizione

System administrators can upgrade users from a Chatter Free, Chatter External, or Chatter Only license to a full Salesforce license when those users need access to standard Salesforce objects, records, and features. Chatter Free licenses provide access only to Chatter collaboration features, while Chatter External licenses are for external users outside your organization. This article describes how to perform this license change in both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience, and covers important notes on downgrade limitations.

Update Chatter Only, Chatter External or Chatter Free Users

To change a user's license, navigate to the User record and update the User License picklist. Note: Users with a full Salesforce, Partner, or Integration license cannot be downgraded to Chatter Free, Chatter External, or Identity licenses without first deactivating the user.

In Salesforce Classic

  1. Click Setup.
  2. Under 'Administer' click Manage Users | Users.
  3. Next to the User’s name, click Edit.
  4. From the 'User License' picklist, select Salesforce.
  5. Click Save.

In Lightning Experience

  1. Navigate to Setup | Users | Users
  2. Next to the User’s name, click Edit.
  3. From the 'User License' picklist, select Salesforce.
  4. Click Save.

Notes

  1. Users with a Full Salesforce license, a Partner license, or a Salesforce Integration license can’t be downgraded to a Chatter Free, Chatter External, Chatter Only*, or Identity license. As a workaround, edit the user’s username and append “.old” (or similar to prevent username duplication), deactivate the user, and then create a user with the new license type needed.
*Salesforce license can be downgraded to Chatter Only provided it’s available and provisioned on the org.

  1. Users migrated from Chatter Free User license to standard or Salesforce full license can’t access their own profile information. Log a customer support case to address this issue.
