View or Edit Private Notes and Attachments in Salesforce Legacy (Classic) Notes Feature

This article applies to the Legacy Notes and Attachments feature in Salesforce Classic, which is being replaced by Enhanced Notes and Files in Lightning Experience. Use this article when you need to understand who can view or edit notes and attachments that have been marked as Private.

Old Note-Taking Tool


The Private Checkbox on a note indicates that the note is only accessible to the owner and administrators.

  • To view a private note, administrators need the "View All Data" permission.
  • To edit a private note, administrators need the "Modify All Data" permission.


Attachment:


The Private Checkbox on an attachment indicates that the attachment is only accessible to the person who created or attached it, and to administrators.

  • To view a private attachment, administrators need the "View All Data" permission.
  • To edit a private attachment, administrators need the "Modify All Data" permission.
