Salesforce Validation Rule Error Message Not Displaying During Inline Editing in List View

Publiceringsdatum: May 4, 2026
Beskrivning

In Salesforce, when a validation rule is active and a user attempts to edit one or more records using Inline Editing in a List View, the records are blocked from saving correctly — meaning the validation rule is working as expected. However, the validation rule error message may not visibly appear to the user, making it unclear why the update did not succeed.

This behavior differs between Salesforce Classic and Salesforce Lightning Experience, and this article explains the expected behavior and resolution for each interface.

Lösning

The visibility of validation rule error messages during Inline Editing in a List View depends on which Salesforce interface is being used. Follow the steps below that correspond to your interface.

Salesforce Classic — Inline Editing Validation Rule Error

In Salesforce Classic, when a validation rule is triggered during Inline Editing in a List View, the error message is displayed in a popup window. If the popup window does not appear, check your browser's popup blocker settings to ensure popups are allowed for your Salesforce org.

Note that every browser has different settings for blocking or enabling popups, so the steps to configure this will vary. Once popups are enabled, a popup window appears and lists all rows that you attempted to update. The popup displays records that were successfully updated, as well as records that failed to update along with the corresponding validation rule error message.

Salesforce Lightning Experience — Inline Editing Validation Rule Error

In Salesforce Lightning Experience, when a validation rule is triggered during Inline Editing in a List View, a warning icon is displayed next to the Cancel and Save buttons. Click the warning icon to view the validation rule error message.
