Change business accounts to person accounts

Business Accounts and Person Accounts are differentiated from one another in Salesforce based on Person Account Record Types.


For detailed steps on how to prepare your organization and then change your Business Accounts to Person Accounts:
 

  1. Access the Setting Up Person Accounts guide
  2. Scroll to the section 'Convert Business Accounts to Person Accounts'
  3. Carefully read and follow the instructions provided.

Once you've completed the steps above, you should have a CSV file that contains:
 

  • An Account ID column that contains only the IDs of the Business Accounts that you would like to convert to Person Accounts
  • A Record Type ID column that contains the Person Account Record Type ID that you would like to associate with the newly transferred Person Accounts. 
 

Mapping any other fields in Data Loader will cause the update to fail.


Use the file you created and Data Loader to perform an update to the Account record's 'RecordTypeId' field.

Updating an existing Business Account record type Id to a Person Account record type Id effectively converts it to a Person Account. See Import Person Accounts or more details.
