Sandbox Clone FAQ

Publish Date: Apr 2, 2026
Description

Q: What is a Sandbox Clone? How is different from regular Sandbox?

A: The Sandbox Clone feature allows a customer to create a copy of an existing sandbox. The copy will contain all data that existed in the Source Sandbox at the time of the copy. A regular sandbox is a copy of production organization, while the clones are copy of a Source Sandbox.

Q: Why am I unable to create a Clone Sandbox?

A: Licenses availability - A sandbox clone can only be of the same type sandbox as the source. For example, a 'Full Copy Sandbox' can only be cloned as another 'Full Copy Sandbox.' Note: If you do not have spare licenses for the clone, you will not be able to create or refresh clone sandboxes. Also, some older sandboxes may not be available for cloning. Unavailable source orgs don’t have a Clone link next to them.

Q: Can Deleted or Refreshed Clone Sandboxes be recovered?

A: No. Just like regular Sandbox, deleted or refreshed clone sandboxes cannot be recovered.

Q: Are there any SLAs for Clone Sandbox Refresh?

A: Just like regular sandboxes, clones also do not have SLAs for refresh. Sandbox refreshes can complete in hours, days, or they could take more than a week.

Resolution

Q: How do I use the Sandbox Clone feature?

A: You can create or refresh a cloned sandbox the same way you use a regular sandbox. The only difference is that you have to choose your 'source' sandbox rather than production on the 'Create From' drop-down field. Note: You can clone a sandbox that’s on a different major Salesforce release version than your production organization.

Q: How can I identify if a Sandbox is a Clone?

A: If you go to the Sandbox List Page (Setup | Sandboxes) in your production organization, you will notice that cloned sandboxes have a 'Sandbox Name' under the column 'Copied From.' This sandbox is the Source Sandbox for the clone.
