Importing Customer Portal or Partner Portal users in Salesforce requires the Edit Self-Service Users permission. Before you can import the users, you first need to create three associated records: an Account record to associate with the users, Contact records to associate with each user, and the Portal Role to assign to the users.
Note: Starting with Summer '13, the Customer Portal user license is not available for new organizations. You can create a customer portal using the Customer Account Portal Lightning template in Community Builder. Existing organizations using Customer Portal licenses can continue to use their licenses.
Note: If you create multiple Accounts, it may not be feasible to create all of the roles in advance. This process works without creating the roles, and assigns each new user to the Standard User role by default. For example, if you create an Account named Acme, this process names the role Acme Standard User.
This article answers how to bulk-create Customer Portal or Partner Portal users in Salesforce by using Data Loader. It covers the records you need first and the CSV file columns you need to insert the user records.
Set up the Account or multiple Accounts for your Customer Portal or Partner Portal Contacts. Then create all the Contact records. To create Customer Portal users, you must have the Edit Self-Service Users permission.
After you have the three associated records (Account, Contact, and Portal Role), create a CSV file with the following columns to create the new users:
After the CSV file is ready, use Data Loader to perform an Insert operation on the User object.
For more information about each of these fields, review the SOAP API documentation for the User object listed in Additional Resources. To find out whether the process can be reversed, review the article about mass disabling portal users with Data Loader, also listed in Additional Resources.
