Default the Primary Contact lookup on a Salesforce CPQ Quote

The steps below outline how to set a default Primary Contact on new quotes in Salesforce CPQ.

Salesforce CPQ supports the following three methods to set a default Primary Contact when creating quotes from opportunities:

  1. Reference the related opportunity's Primary Contact Role in the opportunity's Contact Roles related list.
  2. Create a custom CPQ Special Field on the Opportunity (Supported in Salesforce Classic only)
  3. Create a New Quote Quick Action on the Opportunity (Supported in Salesforce Lightning only)

1. Referencing of the related opportunity's Primary Contact Role in the opportunity's Contact Roles related list can be enabled or disabled from the CPQ package settings. To enable:

  1. Go to Setup | Installed Packages
  2. Click Configure next to Salesforce CPQ package
  3. From Quote tab, uncheck Disable Quote Contact Defaulting and click Save

2. Creating a custom CPQ Special field on the Opportunity (Salesforce Classic Only). To set up the field:

  1. Go to Setup.
  2. Click Opportunity | Fields & Relationships
  3. Click New
  4. Select Lookup Relationship
  5. Related To: Contact
  6. Field Name: QuotePrimaryContact
  7. Set field level security for the field. Click Next.
  8. Set page layouts for the field. Click Save.


3. Creating a custom Special Field and a New Quote quick action on the Opportunity (Salesforce Lightning), refer to the steps above to create a special field on the Opportunity. To create a New Quote quick action on the Opportunity, follow the steps outlined in the article linked in the outline above, in number 3.


NOTE: When using the CPQ special field, if the QuotePrimaryContact field contains a contact record ID the quote's primary Contact field will default with that contact's name. If a primary contact role and a QuotePrimaryContact id exists, the Primary Contact Role will override the QuotePrimaryContact.
