How to Set or Change the Fiscal Year Start Month in a Salesforce Organization (Classic and Lightning)

Salesforce allows you to configure your organization's Fiscal Year to match your company's financial planning calendar. The fiscal year setting determines which months are included in quarterly and annual forecasts and reports.

By default, Salesforce uses a standard calendar fiscal year starting in January. If your organization operates on a non-calendar fiscal year — for example, a fiscal year that starts in July or September — you can update this in Salesforce Setup.

Important: Changing the fiscal year deletes all existing User Quotas. Before making changes, run a Quota report to capture existing values, as they will need to be re-entered manually after the change.

A System Administrator can set or change the fiscal year start month using the following navigation paths:

In Salesforce Classic

Setup > Administer > Company Profile > Fiscal Year
Configure the following:

  • Fiscal Year Start Month – Select the calendar month that begins your organization's fiscal year.
  • Fiscal Year is Based On – Choose whether the fiscal year number is determined by the calendar year of the Starting Month or the Ending Month.

Example: If your fiscal year runs from September 2008 to August 2009, you can label it as FY2008 (based on starting month) or FY2009 (based on ending month).

In Salesforce Lightning Experience

Setup > Company Settings > Calendar Settings > Fiscal Year
In Lightning, you have two fiscal year options:
2.1 Standard Fiscal Year Follows the Gregorian calendar but starts on the first day of any month you choose. This is the most common configuration.
2.2 Custom Fiscal Year Follows a fully custom structure you define — for example, 4 quarters with 13 weeks each in a 4-4-5 pattern, or 13 periods per year instead of 12 months.

 

Warning: Changing the fiscal year permanently deletes all User Quotas. Run a Quota report and save the data before making any changes. Users and administrators must manually re-enter quota values after the fiscal year change is applied.
