Bounce management fails to mark Leads or Contacts as bounced or invalid

Publiceringsdatum: Sep 3, 2025
Beskrivning

Once bounce management has been activated users may test this by sending an e-mail to a non-existent domain or an invalid recipient at an existing domain.

Notes:

  • This article applies to both Salesforce Classic and Lightning users
  • When we send an email from Salesforce to an invalid user at a valid domain, we receive the bounce email and the bounce alert appears on the email address field on the Salesforce record (Contact/Lead)
  • The bounce alert does NOT appear on the email address field if the email is sent to an invalid domain
  • If the org has Email Relay enabled, the bounce management feature will work given the relay server does not alter the return path and returns the bounce back to Salesforce
  • The Email Message on the Activity Timeline will show a bounce alert for emails that are sent to an invalid domain after the email delivery permanently fails (after 24 hrs)

Lösning

Currently, we set the email address as invalid for "user unknown" and other known user errors that our application receives from the intended recipients' mail server. This means that we have contacted the MTA (Message Transfer Agent) that owns the domain, presented the recipient to them and they have rejected it with a 5xx error that amounts to user unknown. If we get any other error messages that are not listed below the email may not be marked as invalid. If we do not receive any bounces from customer's side (their MTA) Salesforce will not mark the Emails as bounced or invalid.

The main replies from an MTA that trigger the bounce alert are:

  • account has been disabled
  • account inactive
  • account is inactive
  • account is not active
  • account is not exist
  • account not found
  • account unavailable
