Salesforce Outlook Integration Authentication Fails with White Screen Due to Internet Explorer Protected Mode Setting

Udgivelsesdato: Jun 28, 2026
Beskrivelse

When a user attempts to authenticate the Salesforce Outlook Integration for the first time in Microsoft Outlook, the authentication window displays a white screen instead of the expected Salesforce login page. The user is unable to complete authentication.

This issue occurs on Windows computers where the Salesforce domains have been added to Trusted Sites in Internet Options (Internet Explorer settings), but the Enable Protected Mode option for the Trusted Sites zone is not enabled. When Protected Mode is disabled for Trusted Sites, Internet Explorer cannot properly render the Salesforce authentication page inside the Outlook add-in panel, resulting in a white screen.

Affected Component: Salesforce Outlook Integration (Salesforce for Outlook add-in on Windows)
Root Cause: "Enable Protected Mode" is not selected for the Trusted Sites zone in Internet Explorer (inetcpl.cpl) settings.

Løsning

To resolve the white screen authentication issue in Salesforce Outlook Integration, enable Protected Mode for the Trusted Sites zone in Internet Explorer (Internet Options) settings.

How to Enable Protected Mode for Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Options on your Windows computer. You can do this by:
    1. Pressing the Windows key, typing inetcpl.cpl in the search box, and pressing Enter. OR
    2. Pressing the Windows key, typing Internet Options in the search box, and pressing Enter.
  2. In the Internet Properties window, click the Security tab.
  3. Click the Trusted Sites zone icon to select it.
  4. Check (select) the box labeled Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer).
  5. Click Apply, then click OK.
  6. Restart Internet Explorer (or restart your computer if prompted).
  7. Open Microsoft Outlook and re-attempt authentication with the Salesforce Outlook Integration.

Once Protected Mode is enabled for Trusted Sites and Internet Explorer is restarted, the Salesforce authentication page renders correctly and the user can complete authentication.

Alternative Workaround (Without Changing Internet Explorer Settings)
If the user cannot or does not want to change Internet Explorer settings, they can authenticate through Outlook on the Web (OWA, sometimes called Webmail) instead:

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to your organization's Outlook Web App (OWA) URL.
  2. Open the Salesforce Outlook Integration add-in within OWA.
  3. Complete authentication through OWA.

After authenticating via OWA, the user's Salesforce Outlook Integration session is also activated in the desktop Outlook application, allowing them to use the integration without modifying Internet Explorer settings.
Note: This workaround is useful for users who do not have administrator rights to change Internet Options, or as a temporary fix while IT configures the Protected Mode setting via Group Policy.
