Your username for Salesforce does not have to be your email address

Date de publication: Jul 14, 2026
Description

In Salesforce, every user account requires a unique username that is formatted like an email address (for example, user@company.org). However, the username does not have to be a real, valid email address—it only needs to follow the email address format (for example, xxxx@xxx.com) and be globally unique across all Salesforce organizations.

The Username and Email Address are two separate fields on the User record and can contain different values. This article explains how to update your username or email address as an end user or as a system administrator.

Résolution

If You Are an End User

A user's username and email address do not have to be the same. However, the username must be globally unique because Salesforce does not allow duplicate usernames.

To update your username or email address:

  1. Navigate to Your Name | My Settings | Personal | Advanced User Details.

  2. Click Edit.

  3. Update your username or email address as needed.

  4. Click Save.

Note: Usernames can only be changed from Advanced User Details, not from Personal Information. Ensure the email address on your user record is valid, as Salesforce uses it to send password resets and other important notifications.

If You Are a System Administrator

To update another user's username or email address:

  1. Navigate to Setup | Manage Users | Users.

  2. Select the user whose information you want to update.

  3. Click Edit.

  4. Modify the username or email address as required.

  5. Click Save.

  6. The following confirmation message is displayed:

"To ensure system security, the owner of the new email address must verify this change. When you click OK, an email will be sent to the specified address with directions on confirming this change. Click Cancel if you do not want to make this change."

  1. Click OK to continue.

The user will receive an email requesting verification of the new email address.

Note: The Manage Users permission is required to edit usernames. If you do not have this permission, contact your Salesforce system administrator.
