Salesforce Email Alerts Not Sent to Account Owner of Custom Object

Data pubblicazione: Apr 3, 2026
Descrizione

There are a couple of reasons why an Account owner might not receive email alerts from a workflow or approval that is associated with a custom object.

Email alerts configured with 'Account Owner' as a recipient type will only fire if the custom object has a Master-Detail relationship with Account (with Account as the master). If the relationship is a Lookup only, the account is not treated as a parent record and the Account Owner will not receive the alert.

Risoluzione

The email alert may not be received by the account owner in two scenarios:

1. The custom object is linked to the account via a lookup to opportunity.
2. The custom object is linked to the account directly via a lookup field.

Things to remember:
  • An email notification is sent only when there is a Master-Detail relationship between the account and the custom object (the account is the master). This is the designed system behavior.
  • A lookup relationship does not suffice. ‘Account Owner’ field on the email alert pertains to the Parent account of the record. If the relationship between the custom object and account is only via Lookup, the account is not considered as the Parent account. This relationship would have to be established with a Master-Detail relationship with Account as the Master.

Note: When changing table relationships and field types, please consult Help and Training to ensure that you maintain the desired data integrity.

This is also in development as per this idea on the idea exchange.
