Hyphen in an 'Opportunities with Products and Schedules' report

In some cases, a hyphen or dash character (-) may appear in reports based on the Opportunities with Products and Schedules report type. This symbol appears within the Schedule Quantity or Schedule Amount fields.
This is expected behavior in Salesforce. This article explains why the hyphen appears and what it represents.

Ratkaisu

When you run an Opportunities with Products and Schedules report, you expect a listing of each scheduled line item for each product on the opportunity, showing how many scheduled shipments occur in a given time period. In some cases, users see a hyphen or dash in the Schedule Quantity or Schedule Amount fields.

Why the Hyphen Appears

When an org does not have quantity scheduling enabled, Salesforce assumes the products were delivered on the close date. To prevent incorrect totals, Salesforce separates the quantity row from the amount rows by date. The hyphen or dash symbol in a field means that field is intentionally left blank for that row, because showing a value would cause totals to be counted multiple times.

Report Behavior Example

Scenario: An opportunity with a product quantity of 5 has a revenue schedule for three dates — January 9, 2013; January 10, 2013; and January 11, 2013 — at $100 each date.
Because the report type is Opportunities with Products and Schedules, one row displays for each schedule date. Without the hyphen behavior, the report would look like this (incorrect):

Schedule DateSchedule QuantitySchedule Amount
01/09/20135$100
01/10/20135$100
01/11/20135$100

This would result in a total Schedule Quantity of 15 — which is incorrect, as the actual quantity is 5.

Expected Result (Correct Report Behavior)

To show accurate totals, Salesforce displays one row with the quantity and separate rows for each scheduled amount. Fields that are intentionally excluded from a row display a hyphen (blank — not applicable):

Schedule DateSchedule QuantitySchedule Amount
01/09/20135(blank — amount not applicable for this row)
01/09/2013(blank — quantity not applicable)$100
01/10/2013(blank — quantity not applicable)$100
01/11/2013(blank — quantity not applicable)$100

The total Schedule Quantity is correctly shown as 5. The total Schedule Amount is correctly shown as $300.

Note: The same logic applies if the hyphen appears in the Schedule Amount field instead.
