Turn off User Account Control (UAC) in Windows for Salesforce for Outlook Installation

Fecha de publicación: Jul 13, 2026
Descripción

Users may be unable to install Salesforce for Outlook successfully, or may experience sync issues such as the sync getting stuck at 0%, or error messages like "unable to communicate with Outlook." This occurs on computers running Windows 7, Windows 8.x, or Windows 10 when User Account Control (UAC) is enabled or set to the highest security setting.
User Account Control (UAC) is a Windows security feature that prompts for administrator permission before allowing software changes. When UAC is set to the highest level, it can block or interfere with the Salesforce for Outlook plug-in installation and sync process.
Note: In Windows 7 and Windows 8.x, setting UAC to Never Notify effectively disables it. Be aware that disabling UAC may affect the behavior of Internet Explorer and some built-in Windows applications. Re-enable UAC and restart your computer when you are finished with the Salesforce for Outlook installation.

Solución

To resolve Salesforce for Outlook installation or sync issues caused by User Account Control, disable UAC in Windows, restart the machine, and then reinstall the Salesforce for Outlook plug-in.

Disable UAC in Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10

  1. Click Start and type UAC in the search box.
  2. Select Change User Account Control Settings from the results.
  3. On the User Account Control window, click Yes or Allow.
  4. When the User Account Control Settings window opens, set the slider to Never Notify.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Yes or Allow on the confirmation prompt.
  7. Restart the computer. Changes do not take effect until after a reboot.

After restarting, reinstall the Salesforce for Outlook plug-in.

Verify UAC is disabled (Optional — Registry Editor)

To confirm UAC is disabled via the Windows Registry:

  1. Open Registry Editor (search for it in the Start menu).
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > System
  3. Double-click EnableLUA.
  4. Confirm the value is 0 (disabled). If it is 1, change it to 0.
  5. Restart the computer.

Registry Key Reference: UAC Disabled = 0, UAC Enabled = 1.
If your company's security policy prevents you from disabling UAC, refer to the Salesforce for Outlook sync errors article linked in Additional Resources below.
