Turn off User Account Control in Windows

Sometimes Users are unable to install Salesforce for Outlook successfully or receive error messages during the installation. They may experience some sync issues or weird behavior such as sync getting stuck on 0% or messages such as unable to communicate with Outlook.

This occurs on computers running Windows 7, Windows 8.+, and Windows 10 where the User Account Control (UAC) is enabled or set to highest setting.
 

Note:

  • In Windows 7 and Windows 8.x, you simply set the UAC to NEVER NOTIFY to disable it.
  • IE and a few other built-in Windows applications such as IE Edge may not work if you turn off UAC. Make sure you re-enable and restart after you are done  .

You may need to disable the UAC feature in Windows and restart your machine. Then you will reinstall the Salesforce plug-in.

 

To disable the UAC in Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10:

  1. Click Start and type UAC in the search box. You should see the 'Change User Account Control Settings' window.
  2. On the User Account Control window, click YES or Allow.
  3. When the User Account Control Settings opens, set it to NEVER NOTIFY and click OK.
  4. Select YES or Allow'again on the User Account Control window.
  5. You MUST reboot the computer for changes to take effect


 

Verify UAC is turned off

To verify if UAC is disabled, here are the steps:
 
  1. Search for Registry Editor
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Policies > System
  3. Double click on EnableLUA, verify if value is 0; if not, change it to 0.
  4. Restart computer.
     

Registry Key Values:

  • UAC Disabled: 0
  • UAC Enabled: 1


The steps above are the easiest way to update the UAC settings, but there are other ways to change this setting. Please contact Microsoft Support for additional information.
