The "Close Date (2)" field is available as a column in Opportunity Reports. It doesn't appear on Opportunity records and isn't available in the Setup menu.
Scenario: a sales manager wants to build a matrix report that shows Opportunities grouped by calendar year across the columns and by calendar month down the rows. By using Close Date for the year grouping and Close Date (2) for the month grouping, both date dimensions can be applied to the same report.
This article explains why Salesforce offers a duplicate "Close Date (2)" field on Opportunity Reports, and how to use it to group the same date field two different ways in a single report.
Salesforce reports don't allow you to group by the same field twice. The Close Date (2) field exists as a workaround to this limitation by presenting the Close Date field a second time under a different name.
The Close Date and Close Date (2) fields let you group an Opportunity report by Close Date in two different ways at once. For example, in a matrix report you can group by Year along the columns using Close Date, and by Month down the rows using Close Date (2).
