Give Users Permission to Change Account Ownership

Users may be unable to change the owner of an Account or transfer records if they do not have the Transfer Records system permission. This permission must be enabled on the user's Profile or assigned via a Permission Set. This article explains how to grant the Transfer Records permission in both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience.
For example, if a sales representative needs to reassign an Account to a new owner after a territory realignment, they must have the Transfer Records permission enabled.

To accomplish this, the "Transfer Records" permission must be added to the users' profile or permission set with the permission assigned to them.
 

Give Permission to Transfer Records


In Salesforce Classic

Note: Salesforce Classic is a legacy interface. Most customers should follow the Lightning Experience steps below.

To set the permissions on a Profile:

  1. Navigate to Setup | Administer | Manage Users | Profiles
  2. Click Edit next to the new custom Profile you created
  3. Select Transfer Record
  4. Click Save
 

To set the permissions for a Profile using the Enhanced Profile editor: 

  1. Navigate to Setup | Administer | Manage Users | Profiles
  2. Click the name of the new custom profile you created
  3. Click System Permissions
  4. Select Transfer Record
  5. Click Save  
 

To create a Permission Set:

  1. Navigate to Setup | Permission Set
  2. Click the New button, enter Label and API Name, then click Next
  3. Click System Permissions
  4. Click Edit
  5. Select Transfer Record then click Save
  6. Click Manage Assignments
  7. Click Add Assignments
  8. Select the users who need this permission, then click Assign
 


In Lightning Experience


To set the permissions for a Profile:

  1. Click Gear icon | Setup
  2. Enter Profiles on the Quick Find box
  3. Click Edit next to the new custom profile you created
  4. Select Transfer Record
  5. Click Save  


To set the permissions for a Profile using the Enhanced Profile editor: 

  1. Click Gear icon | Setup 
  2. Enter Profiles on the Quick Find box
  3. Click the name of the new custom profile you created
  4. Click System Permissions
  5. Select Transfer Record
  6. Click Save
 

To create a Permission Set

  1. Navigate to Setup | Permission set
  2. Click the New button, enter Label and API Name, then click Next
  3. Click System Permissions
  4. Click Edit
  5. Select Transfer Records then click Save
  6. Click Manage Assignments
  7. Click Add Assignments
  8. Select the users who need this permission, then click Assign
