This article describes an error that appears when launching Salesforce for Outlook (SFO): "Salesforce for Outlook was unable to open successfully." This error occurs due to a version mismatch in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) with the Microsoft Office Primary Interop Assembly (PIA). This is not a Salesforce issue and is caused by the Microsoft Office installation on the affected Windows computer.
Note: Salesforce for Outlook (SFO) is a retired product. For current Salesforce email integrations, see the Outlook Integration documentation.
Issue
Users receive the error "Salesforce for Outlook was unable to open successfully" when launching the Salesforce for Outlook add-in on Windows.
Root Cause
The Global Assembly Cache (GAC) on the affected machine contains a version of the Microsoft Office Primary Interop Assembly (PIA) that does not match the installed version of Microsoft Office. This mismatch prevents SFO from loading correctly.
This resolution guides administrators and users through uninstalling Salesforce for Outlook, cleaning up the GAC, reinstalling Microsoft Office with the correct Service Pack, and reinstalling Salesforce for Outlook to resolve the version mismatch error.
Uninstall Salesforce for Outlook from the affected Windows computer using the standard Add/Remove Programs method before proceeding.
After uninstalling SFO, clear any residual registry entries related to the Salesforce for Outlook installation. This ensures there are no conflicting entries when reinstalling.
The Microsoft Office installation must include the correct Service Pack to ensure the Primary Interop Assembly (PIA) version matches what Salesforce for Outlook requires. The following Service Pack versions are required:
Download the appropriate Service Pack directly from the Microsoft Download Center and apply it to the existing Office installation.
For Office 2013 and Office 2016, additional configuration may be required after applying the Service Pack. Ensure that the Microsoft Office Primary Interop Assembly components are selected during the Office installation or repair. These components are required for Salesforce for Outlook to communicate with the local Office installation.
After completing the above steps, reinstall Salesforce for Outlook using the installer from Setup in your Salesforce org. Launch the add-in to verify the error is resolved.
