Find the Salesforce Report Type Used by a Report

Publish Date: Apr 27, 2026
Description

Once a custom report type has been created and you are working with various reports/dashboards, it can be difficult to determine which report type is utilized by the report itself.

Resolution

In order to find or pull out the report type, review the following:

Using the Lightning Experience Report Builder:

  1. Navigate to the report in question.
  2. Click Edit while viewing the report.
  3. In the upper, left corner of the report edit page, the report type in use will be displayed next to the title of the report.  In this example, the report type is "Accounts".

Using the Salesforce Classic Report Builder:

  1. Create a Custom Report Type with Reports as the primary object.
  2. Ensure the Report Type field has been added to the report layout.
  3. Create a Report using the custom report type created above.
  4. Add necessary filters to your report to ensure it returns the report(s) in question.
  5.  Make sure you add the Report Type field as a column within the report. This field will display the report type in use.
