Account Owner and the Contact Owner are different for certain Person Account records

If a 'Contacts & Accounts' report to see person account records is being used, finding only a few person accounts whose contact owner and account owner do not match, and there is no UI to change the Contact Owner information, please review the following.

This can happen when a person account record is created by lead conversion under a specific condition.

Root Cause: Lead Conversion Ownership Rules

When a lead is converted and attached to a Person Account, Salesforce applies specific ownership assignment rules defined in the Lead Conversion process: If you create a lead, convert it, and attach it to a person account owned by someone else, the person account owner becomes the contact owner. If you convert a lead owned by someone else and attach it to a person account that you own, the lead owner becomes the contact owner. This is working as designed per Salesforce Help & Training documentation on Understanding Lead Conversion.
 

How to Update Person Account and Contact Ownership

The following options are available to align Contact Owner with Account Owner:
 
  1. Through UI: Person contact information is not directly accessible via the UI, so there is no direct option to change the person contact owner through the user interface.
  2. Transferring via UI: When transferring a Person Account to another user via the UI — if the Contact Owner and Account Owner are the same, both will be updated. If they differ, only the Account Owner will be updated.
  3. Through API (Data Loader or Workbench): Attempting to update the Contact Owner on the Contact object via API will result in updating the Account Owner (Account object) instead. For records where the Account Owner and Contact Owner differ, this will update only the Account Owner.
  4. Updating Account Owner via API: Updating the Person Account Owner via API will update both the Account Owner and the Contact Owner simultaneously.
