User is Locked out of Salesforce Daily

Sometimes user may encounter the "Please check your username and password. If you still can't log in, contact your Salesforce administrator." message when logging in every morning, even when they are using the correct username and password.

If you have exhausted all other troubleshooting options in Unable to log in to Salesforce:

  • This issue can be caused by any third-party applications, packages and plug-ins including but not limited to Connect for Outlook, Connect for Office and Data Loader. 
  • Due to the fact that users do not actively use these application they may not realize that an app is attempting to login each night.
  • If a user changes their password from the one that they used to initially work with one of the applications, this problem can start.

Daily lockouts are typically caused by a third-party application attempting to authenticate with outdated credentials. The steps below outline how to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Diagnosing the Issue:

A System Administrator can check the user's Login History in Setup. Look for repeated incorrect password login attempts and lockout events associated with an API process. This indicates a third-party app is attempting to log in on behalf of the user. Ask the user whether they actively use any plug-ins or connected applications.

 

Immediate Resolution:

The affected user may reach out to an active System Administrator to have their username changed. This will disconnect the third-party app linked to their user account and will cease any invalid login attempts. Ensure that the user is aware that changing their username will also disconnect all other connected third-party apps.

If the user does not use the plug-in, ask permission to uninstall it.

 

Long-term Solutions:

If the user actively works with the connected application, the password stored within that application will need to be updated to match the user's current Salesforce credentials. Whether this falls within Salesforce's support boundary depends on the application in question. If it is not supported by Salesforce, the user may need to contact the provider or designated support team of the application.
