Enable Field History Tracking for Content

Publish Date: Feb 20, 2024
Description

You can track changes to Content Version fields, just as you can do for fields on other standard objects. This feature is available in both Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic.

For some tracked fields, both old and new values are recorded:

  •     External Data Source
  •     Language
  •     Owner
  •     Freeze Sharing
  •     Major Version
  •     Title

For other tracked fields, only the new values are recorded:

  •     Content URL
  •     External Document Info1
  •     Reason for Change
  •     External Document Info2

Below is an introductory video on tracking changes to fields.

Resolution

To set history tracking for Content Version:

  1. Access Fields for the Content object:
    1. In Lightning Experience:
      1. Click Setup | Object Manager
      2. Type Content Version into the Quick Find box and click Content Version
      3. Click Fields & Relationships
    2. In Salesforce Classic
      1. Click Setup
      2. Type Files into the Quick Find box
      3. Click Fields under Salesforce Files
  2. Click Set History Tracking
  3. Check next to the fields to be tracked
  4. Save

Unlike other standard objects, field history for the Content is only available by querying the object ContentVersionHistory with Data Loader or another API tool.
