Error 'database disk image is malformed' in Salesforce for Outlook

Description
Why do I receive the following error messages when trying to install the latest version of Salesforce for Outlook and also when trying to sync records using the plugin:
 
"Unable to access your configuration, Review the appropriate log for details."

Or

"Unable to access your Outlook data. Review the appropriate log for details."

Or

"The database disk image is malformed."
Résolution

Please follow the steps outlined below:
 
  1. Close the Salesforce for Outlook plug-in, by right-clicking on the 'S' icon in the system tray and selecting Exit.
  2. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press R  (Windows key + R) to open up the Run command, then enter %appData%\salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook.
  3. In that folder, rename the 'DB' folder.
  4. Launch Salesforce for Outlook from your Start Menu or by double clicking on the Salesforce for Outlook icon on your Desktop. 
  5. At the bottom right corner of your screen, in the system tray (next to your computer clock), you should see a grey 'S' icon.
  6. Right click on it, and click on Settings
  7. Enter your Salesforce credentials and click on login.
  8. Click on Allow and click on Next.
  9. Select your default sync folder and click on Next.
  10. Select your sync method (manual vs automatic). For more information, please see Salesforce for Outlook Sync selection in the SFO wizard.
  11. Click on Save and exit the wizard.
  12. Sync will start automatically.
