ISSUE

Salesforce for Outlook Side Panel fails to load after installing Salesforce for Outlook in Windows 8, 8.1, or Windows 10.

POSSIBLE ROOT CAUSE
This could be caused by any or all of the following reasons:

1. User not having access to the Program Files folder (Only applies to SFO version 2.4.2 and earlier or installations of SFO 2.8 and later has been performed the "Everyone who logs in to this computer" option).

2. The .NET "Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation" feature is not installed on the computer.

3. Previous versions of SFO (Version 2.4.2 and earlier) have been uninstalled by the end user who does not have local admin rights on the computer as well as all the pre-requisites (Such as VSTO PIA etc) or the SFO version 2.5.x and newer have been installed by a system admin user or using the Right click | Run as Administrator option.

Resolution

STEP 1 - Adjusting UAC

Make sure User Account Control (UAC) is set to NEVER NOTIFY and restart and then try to reproduce the issue. For more information on how to set UAC to Never Notify please review, Turn off User Account Control in Windows.

When lowering UAC does not fix the issue move to STEP 2.

STEP 2 - Make sure the Side Panel is not hidden.

STEP 3 - Uninstalling SFO
First step id to completely uninstall Salesforce for Outlook from the Control Panel. For more, please review Uninstall Salesforce for Outlook.

STEP 4 - Setting the permission on the Programs Files folder

** This step applies only to SFO installation with the Everyone option. Please skip this step if SFO was installed with the Me Only option please skip this step..

By default, Windows 8 imposes strict access permissions on system-wide locations, folders, and files such as the Program Files folder. You need to add the local user group or Authenticated Users and grant at least modify permission to the Salesforce folder located in Program Files.

To do this, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\ or C:\Program Files\ (Depending on your Office and Windows bitness).

Right click on the salesforce.com folder and click on Properties and then click on the Security tab.

Click on Edit, locate the username you want to change the permission (If you do not see your username or Authenticated users, simply click on Add and type in the name and click on Find. You can also type in Authenticated user and click on Find and add. This would set the permission for all users who would log in to the computer).

Once the computer is restarted, install SFO and try to reproduce the issue.

Next you need to select the user and check the box for Modify and click on OK. Close all folders and restart the computer.

STEP 5 - Installing .NET Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation

If the Side Panel being slow or inconsistent or is not loading, you can try installing the Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation Components for .NET 3.5 or 4.5 and then restart your computer.

To do this,
  1. Click the Start button, and then click the Control Panel.
  2. Click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  3. On the Tasks menu, click Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Find the .NET Framework 3.5 node, select and expand it.
  5. Select the Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation Component box and save the setting.
