When you create a new email template or edit an existing one, you can change the font style of the texts under the Formatting Controls section.

In Salesforce Classic:  Go to Setup > Administer > Communication Templates > Classic Email Templates > Choose HTML template or create New HTML Template > on HTML Edit page navigate to “Formatting Controls” > Font Options

In Lightning Experience:  Go to Setup > Administration > Email > Classic Email Templates > Choose HTML template or create New HTML Template > on HTML Edit page navigate to “Formatting Controls” > Font Options

However, there are times when the text returned of a merge field in an email template will not change or will not recognize the font you set. This usually happens when the merge field is a Rich Text field.

Note: An email template created in Lightning through Setup will also be saved as if it were a template created in Classic.

  • Make sure that the information in the Rich Text field you are pulling into the email template are not copied and pasted from other resources (ex: MS Word).
  • Information should be manually entered as HTML tags from other resources are also copied to the field.
  • So, when you use the field as a merge field, the HTML tags are also pulled to the email template. The tags in the background will override the formatting you set in the template.
