When adding a logo to an HTML email letterhead in Salesforce Classic, the image size must be compatible with the fixed-width HTML structure of the letterhead. In Salesforce Classic, when creating a letterhead for use with HTML email templates, it is possible to add a logo image of any size to the header area. However, the HTML code for the header, body, and footer elements of the letterhead uses a fixed width. If the logo image exceeds this width, the message body and header may become misaligned.

Fixed Dimensions for Email Letterhead Header and Footer

The following dimensions apply to email templates created using the HTML (Using Letterhead) option in Salesforce Classic:

  • Width: 550 pixels (fixed)
  • Height: 100 pixels (default); valid values are all whole numbers from 0 to 999 pixels

How Logo Size Affects Email Rendering

If the included logo is wider or taller than the dimensions defined in the letterhead, most browsers and mail clients allow the image to override the default dimensions. This causes the header to match the width of the image while the message body — which is a separate HTML table entity — continues to render at the default width, resulting in a misaligned layout.
Some older browsers and mail clients, including older versions of Internet Explorer, may instead truncate the image to match the header width rather than expanding the header.

Recommended Approach for Logo Sizing

For best compatibility across the widest range of HTML-capable mail viewers:

  1. Open your logo in a graphics editing program.
  2. Resize the logo to 550 pixels wide, constraining proportions so the height adjusts automatically to maintain the original aspect ratio.
  3. Note the resulting height of the resized logo.
  4. In Salesforce Classic, edit the letterhead and adjust the header height value to match the new logo height.

Additional Notes

  • The Custom (without using Letterhead) HTML email template option allows complete formatting control over message contents, as it includes no predefined formatting constraints.
  • Salesforce does not offer a native image editor. Image resizing must be completed outside of Salesforce before uploading the logo to the letterhead.
