Where Attachments from the Salesforce for Outlook Side Panel Are Stored in Salesforce (Classic and Lightning Experience)

Description

When using the Salesforce for Outlook (SFO) Outlook Side Panel to add emails and attachments to Salesforce records, the storage location of those attachments depends on two factors:

  1. Which icon is clicked in the Side Panel (the icon next to the Contact "Who", or the icon next to the Account/object "What").
  2. Whether you are using the Salesforce Classic or Lightning Experience user interface.

In Salesforce Classic, attachments are added both to the related activity and to the Notes & Attachments related list of the Account. In Lightning Experience, attachments are only added to the related task. Use the Resolution section below for the full breakdown by icon and UI.

Attachment Storage Behavior by Icon and UI
The following sections describe exactly where attachments are stored for each icon and UI combination in Salesforce for Outlook. Use this as a reference when troubleshooting reports of missing attachments.

Contact Icon (Who) — Salesforce Classic

  • The attachment is added to the Task created on the Contact.
  • When the Contact is related to an Account, the attachment is also added to the Notes and Attachments related list of the Account, and to the Task created on the Account.

Account Icon (What) — Salesforce Classic

  • The attachment is added to the Account in the Task that is created.
  • The attachment is also added to the Notes and Attachments related list on the Account.

Custom Object or Other "What" Type Icon — Salesforce Classic

  • The attachment is added to the Task created on the selected object only.
  • It is not added to any related list on the object itself.

Lightning Experience

  • Attachments are added only to the related Task, regardless of which icon is clicked.
  • To view the attachment, open the email from the Past Activity section and then open the Related tab.
