What Is Delegated Authentication?

Delegated Authentication in Salesforce allows your organization to use an external web service to authenticate users, rather than relying on Salesforce's built-in username and password authentication. This is a form of Single Sign-On (SSO) — a method that lets users log in once and access multiple systems without re-entering credentials.


As of the Summer '20 release, this feature is no longer required to be enabled by Salesforce Support. A Salesforce Administrator can enable it directly via Setup.


Delegated Authentication is available in the following editions: Professional, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Developer Editions.

Before You Begin

To enable Delegated Authentication in your Salesforce org, follow the steps below based on your UI mode. After enabling, the Is Single Sign-On Enabled permission becomes available in profiles and permission sets.

In Lightning Experience

  1. Click the gear icon and select Setup.
  2. In the Quick Find box, search for Single Sign-On Settings.
  3. Under Delegated Authentication, select Disable login with Salesforce credentials.

In Salesforce Classic

  1. Click Setup.
  2. In the Quick Find box, search for Single Sign-On Settings.
  3. Under Delegated Authentication, select Disable login with Salesforce credentials.
