When importing records into Salesforce, you may want to control whether workflow rules and process automations fire during the import. The behavior differs depending on the tool you use — the Salesforce Data Import Wizard and the Salesforce Data Loader handle automation execution differently.
By default, the Salesforce Data Import Wizard does not fire workflow rules and processes. Instead, it offers an optional checkbox labeled "Trigger workflow rules and processes for new and updated records."
When you enable this checkbox, workflow rules and processes fire when their criteria are met by the imported records.
Note: Even if "Trigger workflow rules and processes for new and updated records" is not enabled, Apex triggers still fire during a Data Import Wizard import.
To prevent workflows and processes from firing when using the Data Import Wizard, do not enable the "Trigger workflow rules and processes for new and updated records" checkbox.
To disable workflow rules and process automations during a Data Import Wizard import:
With this checkbox unchecked, workflow rules and processes do not fire. Apex triggers will still execute regardless of this setting.
The default behavior for the Salesforce Data Loader is to fire workflow rules and processes. It is currently not possible to disable this behavior when a data upload is performed via the Data Loader.
If you would like this behavior to change, review and vote on the following IdeaExchange post: Bypass / Deactivate workflow rules when using the Data Loader.
