Salesforce Task Assignment Notification Not Sent When Task Is Assigned to the Creator

In Salesforce, when a user creates a new Task and assigns it to themselves, the Task assignment notification email is not sent by default. This is expected behavior when the "Enable User Control of Email Notifications for Tasks" setting is active in Activity Settings.
This article explains the expected behavior for self-assigned Task notifications, how to configure notification settings in both Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic, and how to troubleshoot cases where other users are not receiving Task assignment emails.

Expected Behavior: Tasks Assigned to the Creator

When your Salesforce org is configured to Enable User Control of Email Notifications for Tasks in Salesforce Classic, it is expected that users who create and assign a Task to themselves do not receive an assignment notification email.
If a user assigns a Task to any other user, the assignee receives the Task assignment email notification as expected.

Configuration: Enabling Task Notifications in Lightning Experience

If a user is not receiving Task assignment notifications from other users, check the following:

  1. Go to Setup and search for Notification Delivery Settings.
  2. Under Salesforce Notification Types, expand the Activities section.
  3. Ensure Task assignments has Desktop checked.

Additionally, confirm the user has the "Email me when someone assigns me a task" preference enabled in their Reminder & Alerts setup section. See the "Customizable Reminder Settings" section of the Activity Reminders documentation for details.

Configuration: Enabling Task Notifications in Salesforce Classic

If your org does not have the "Enable User Control over Task Assignment Notifications" preference enabled in Activity Settings, and "Send Notification Email" is selected upon Task creation, users receive an email notification even when assigning a Task to themselves.

Note: Send Notification Checkbox (Classic Only)

The "Send Notification Email" checkbox on Task creation is only available in Salesforce Classic. To display this option:

  • "Enable User Control over Task Assignment Notifications" must be disabled in Activity Settings, AND
  • The "Email Notification Checkbox" preference must be enabled in the Task's associated Page Layout Properties.

Idea: Receive Notifications for Self-Assigned Tasks

If you want to receive notifications for Tasks created and assigned to yourself when "Enable User Control over Task Assignment Notifications" is enabled, consider voting for the Salesforce Idea: Checkbox option for Task Assignment notification emails to be sent to owner.
