How to Create a Salesforce Sandbox Template Without Copying Any Object Data

Publish Date: May 14, 2026
Description

Organizations may have a business need to create a Full or Partial Sandbox without copying any object data — only metadata. This approach provides the storage allocation of a Full or Partial Sandbox while keeping the environment free of production data.
This is achieved by creating a Sandbox Template with no objects selected and then using that template when creating or refreshing the sandbox.
Note: Partial Sandboxes are created with a storage limit of 5 GB. Review General Sandbox and Sandbox Storage Limits and Sandbox Types and Templates for more information.
Your organization may find a business need to create a full or partial sandbox with no data included. This would allow you to have the storage allocation of a full or partial sandbox, but a sandbox with only the metadata copied.

Steps to Create a Sandbox Template Without Object Data

Follow these steps to create a Full or Partial Sandbox that contains only metadata and no object data:

  1. Create a Sandbox Template without selecting any objects to be copied.
  2. Create or refresh a Full or Partial Sandbox, selecting the new template created in Step 1.

Confirm the Sandbox Contains No Data

Once the sandbox completes the activation process:

  1. Log in to the newly created sandbox.
  2. Navigate to a standard object (such as Account or Contact).
  3. Confirm that no records were copied from the production org.
