Bounce categories and reasons for Marketing Cloud email sends

Mailbox providers exist to support their users. This not only means getting mail to its recipients, but also keeping unwanted mail out. Senders must ensure that mail is compliant with authentication standards and respects user preferences. Some bounces are uncontrollable - like those that occur when mailboxes or full or a network is unreachable. But bounces can also result from misconfigured authentication, abrupt increases in volume, or poor reputation. Examining bounces helps senders ensure that avoidable problems are addressed early. To support this, Marketing Cloud categorizes bounces into bounce categories and subcategories.

Bounces are placed in 4 broad categories:

  1. Block Bounces are logged because of a lack of authentication, unexpected volume, or when the domain or IP has poor reputation.
  2. Hard Bounces are logged due to permanent conditions such as when a user or domain does not exist.
  3. Soft Bounces are logged for temporary failures unrelated to sender configuration or reputation such as a full inbox, inactive account status, or temporary DNS failure.
  4. Technical Bounces are logged when the email server rejects the email the message fails due to technical reasons errors, like a failure to make a connection.

Bounces also have a BounceTypeID and there are 2 categories.

         2 immediate

Use bounce category statistics to see trends in your sending health. When a new pattern of bounces emerges, retrieve samples of raw bounce messages to validate their categorization and see details shared by the mailbox provider. Use individual bounce responses in conjunction with the category recommendations below.

3002Inactive AccountAddress is temporarily unavailable. This status can be returned for records that were recently active, but have since been retired. For example, Gmail has a 2 year inactivity policy for users. Users marked as inactive will begin returning this error unless the account is reactivated.
3003Temporary Domain FailureReceiving domain temporarily unavailable. The receiving domain experienced DNS or a system issue at the time of attempted delivery. Consider trying to send to this record again at a later time.

Technical/Other bounce54001Server Too BusyReceiving email server is temporarily overwhelmed with delivery attempts, from you and other senders. The receiving domain experienced DNS or a system issue at the time of attempted delivery. Consider trying to send to this record again at a later time. This message can also be returned when volume is too high, and may require closer attention to warming practices
4002Data Format ErrorEmail is rejected due to formatting or line length errors.Based on the response from the receiving server, the message was likely rejected due to an SMTP formatting issue with your content. The rejection typically means that the email is breaking SMTP protocol by having more than 999 characters on one line (with no carriage return). Consider reviewing your content formatting before attempting the job again.
4003Network ErrorConnection lost or timed out during delivery. The connection between Marketing Cloud servers and the receiving server has timed out. This can occur when the receiving server lacks adequate capacity to receive mail at the rate it is being sent.  Spreading sends to this domain across multiple days may help alleviate rate issues. This message can also be returned when volume is too high, and may require closer attention to warming practices
4999OtherFailed due to temporary failure or indecipherable bounce message.Based on the response from the receiving server, they were likely experiencing DNS or hardware failures at the time of attempted delivery. Consider trying to send to this record again at a later time.
