Typically referred to as blocklists, the infrastructure was created to mitigate mail abuse from spammers and phishers. A DNSBL or RBL (Domain Name Service Block List/Real-time Block List) is a list of Internet Protocol Addresses published via the Internet Domain Name Service. The list can be used by email administrators or receiving MTAs (email servers) through a file or queried in real time to block the delivery of email from IP Addresses.
Blocklist providers have their own proprietary methods for determining which IP Addresses to list and de-list. There are no standards for how blocklist providers operate as a business. In most cases, major reputable blocklist providers, such as Spamhaus, will work with ESPs (Email Service Providers) to de-list their legitimate IP Addresses. However, there are minor blocklist providers that do not accept de-listing requests or require the ESP to pay a monetary fee for removal.
Email administrators/email providers should research and use major, reputable blocklist providers that will work with legitimate ESPs to be de-listed. In general, providers that will not work with ESPs for de-listing, or charge a monetary fee to be de-listed, should not be used at an enterprise production level. Salesforce works with major blocklist providers to ensure the highest deliverability of mail from Salesforce MTAs.
We have come across some minor providers such as UCEPROTECT or SORBS, who have not been receptive to working with ESPs. Unfortunately, Salesforce cannot control what a recipient mail server uses; we can only suggest the mail provider pull from a reputable service. If you feel mail from Salesforce is being blocked by an RBL listing or flagged as spam due to an RBL listing, we can investigate if you can provide the reference showing the line in your email logs in Salesforce (to obtain email logs, navigate to Setup, search on Email Log Files, and set a log request that will show the entry in question) or a copy that includes full headers of the email that is flagged as spam. Salesforce cannot investigate specific RBL activity without log lines or email examples that illustrate the issue.
