Salesforce offers two file-handling mechanisms: Files (available in both Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic) and Attachments (available in Salesforce Classic). The features available depend on which related list and interface you use. This article compares the capabilities of each.

File handling capabilities vary between the Files related list and the Attachments related list in Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic.

Files in Lightning Experience

In Lightning Experience, the Files related list supports the following actions, all accessible via the Files Preview page:

  • Share
  • Download
  • Upload New Version
  • Delete
  • View Followers
  • View Versions
Note: The Edit and Delete options within the downward-facing triangle icon on the View All Files page are greyed out by design. These operations must be performed from the Preview page for the respective file.

Attachments in Lightning Experience

In Lightning Experience, the Attachments related list supports only:

  • Download
  • View (dependent on browser and browser settings)

Files in Salesforce Classic

In Salesforce Classic, the Files related list supports the following actions:

  • Delete
  • Preview
  • Download
  • Sync
  • Edit Details
  • Sharing Settings
  • Upload New Version
  • View Followers
  • View Shared With
  • View Versions

Attachments in Salesforce Classic

In Salesforce Classic, the Attachments related list supports only:

  • Download
  • View (dependent on browser and browser settings)
