In Salesforce, Auto-Number fields automatically generate unique record identifiers using a defined format, such as A-{0000}. Admins may wonder what happens when the numeric sequence reaches its maximum value — for example, when a record following A-9999 is created.
The number portion of the Salesforce Auto-Number format automatically expands by one digit to accommodate sequences that exceed the defined digit count. For example, if the format is A-{0000} and the last assigned number was A-9999, the next record will be assigned A-10000, then A-10001, A-10002, and so on. The format expands as needed without requiring any Admin configuration.
