When a Salesforce Approval Process is updated to allow the Current Approver to edit locked records, this change only applies to records submitted for approval after the update is saved. Records that were already in a pending approval state before the change was made still follow the original Approval Process settings, meaning the Current Approver receives a 'Record Locked' error when attempting to edit them.
Error: 'Record Locked — The record you are trying to edit has been locked. Please contact your administrator if access is necessary.'
When updating this setting on existing Approval Processes it is important to note that this applies to records submitted for approval AFTER you save these changes.
Any records submitted for approval before making the changes adhere to the original settings of the Approval Process. In order to resolve this, first recall the approval request and then resubmit for approval. The Current Approver should then be able to edit the record.
