Populate the Opportunity Name Field on a Lead Before Lead Conversion

Date de publication: Oct 6, 2026
Description

Is it possible to specify the Opportunity Name on the Lead object itself, rather than entering it at the time of conversion? Yes; this article walks through the custom field, field mapping, and record triggered flow setup needed to populate the standard Opportunity Name field automatically when a Lead converts, based on a value entered on the Lead beforehand. It's recommended to do this testing in a Sandbox or developer environment first.

Résolution

This article explains how to specify the Opportunity Name on a Lead before conversion in Salesforce. To do this, create custom fields on the Lead and Opportunity, map the fields, and use a record-triggered Flow to copy the mapped value into the standard Opportunity Name field.

It is recommended to test this configuration in a Sandbox before implementing it in Production.

Step 1: Create a Custom Field on the Lead

Go to Setup | Object Manager | Lead | Fields & Relationships | New.

  1. Select Text as the Data Type.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Enter a Field Label, for example: Opportunity Name.
  4. Set the desired character length.
  5. Configure Field-Level Security.
  6. Add the field to the appropriate Lead Page Layout.
  7. Click Save.

Note: It is recommended that the field not be Read-Only because users need to enter the desired Opportunity Name before converting the Lead.

Step 2: Create a Custom Field on the Opportunity

Go to Setup | Object Manager | Opportunity | Fields & Relationships | New.

  1. Select Text as the Data Type.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Enter a Field Label, for example: Lead Opportunity Name.
  4. Set the character length to match the custom Lead field created in Step 1.
  5. Configure Field-Level Security.
  6. Add the field to the appropriate Opportunity Page Layout, if required.
  7. Click Save.

Step 3: Map the Lead Field to the Opportunity Field

Go to Setup | Object Manager | Lead | Fields & Relationships | Map Lead Fields.

Under the Opportunity field mapping, map the Lead field Lead Opportunity Name to the Opportunity field Lead Opportunity Name, then click Save.

This allows the value entered on the Lead to be carried over to the custom Opportunity field when the Lead is converted.

Step 4: Create a Record-Triggered Flow

Go to Setup | Process Automation | Flows | New Flow, then select Record-Triggered Flow.

Step 5: Configure the Flow Start

  1. For Object, select Opportunity.
  2. For Trigger the Flow When, select A record is created.
  3. Set the Entry Condition:
    • Field: Lead Opportunity Name
    • Operator: Is Null
    • Value: False
  4. For Optimize the Flow for, select Fast Field Updates.
  5. Click Done.

Step 6: Add an Assignment Element

  1. Click + | Assignment.
  2. Enter a Label, for example: Set Opportunity Name.
  3. Set the following value:
    • Variable: $Record.Name
    • Operator: Equals
    • Value: $Record.Lead_Opportunity_Name__c
  4. Click Done.

Replace Lead_Opportunity_Name__c with the API name of the custom Opportunity field created in Step 2.

Step 7: Save the Flow

  1. Click Save.
  2. Enter a Flow Label, for example: Set Opportunity Name from Lead.
  3. Click Save.

Step 8: Activate the Flow

Click Activate.

The complete process works in this order:

  1. A user enters a value in the Lead Opportunity Name field.
  2. The Lead is converted.
  3. The value maps to the custom Opportunity field.
  4. The record-triggered Flow runs.
  5. The standard Opportunity Name is set equal to the custom Opportunity field value.

Step 9: Test the Configuration

  1. Create or open a Lead.
  2. Enter the desired value in the custom Opportunity Name field. For example: Acme Corp - New Business.
  3. Convert the Lead and create an Opportunity.
  4. Open the newly created Opportunity.
  5. Verify that the custom Opportunity field contains Acme Corp - New Business.
  6. Verify that the standard Opportunity Name is also Acme Corp - New Business.

Result

After this configuration is activated, users can specify the desired Opportunity Name directly on the Lead before conversion. For example:

  • Lead: Opportunity Name is Acme Corp - New Business.
  • After Lead conversion, the Opportunity: Lead Opportunity Name is Acme Corp - New Business.
  • After Lead conversion, the Opportunity: Opportunity Name is Acme Corp - New Business.
