Flow Interviews fail to resume due to Inactive Owner

When using Salesforce Flow (Visual Workflow) or Process Builder, paused or scheduled Flow Interviews cannot be resumed if the interview owner's user account has been deactivated. This article explains how to identify affected interviews and prevent this issue.

How to Identify Paused Flow Interviews

  • Lightning: Go to Setup > Process Automation > Paused Flow Interviews
  • Classic: Go to Setup > Create > Workflow & Approvals > Flows > Paused and Waiting Interviews

Since it is not possible to change the Owner/User of a waiting interview, an alternative approach is required to prevent this issue.

Recommended Approach

Instead of setting your User to inactive immediately, freeze the User first. Only deactivate the User after all waiting interviews have been completed or cleared.

For example, if a Process Builder creates scheduled actions (such as actions triggered after seven days), ensure the User remains frozen for at least that duration before deactivation.
